A VIEW INTO THE PARK'S PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE
Site of the Parks dedication in 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Newfound Gap provides access to many of the parks high peaks, spruce-fir forests, and the Appalachian Trail.
Newfound Gap: Becoming a national park was not easy for the people, corporations, and politicians that didn’t want to abandon their homes, farms, investments and constituents in the Great Smoky Mountains. The effort, which began in the 1890s, took a lot of money and the hard work of thousands of people to complete.
On September 2, 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt stood, astride the Tennessee – North Carolina state line, upon the crest of the Rockefeller Memorial at the top of Newfound Gap and dedicated the new Great Smoky Mountains National Park “for the enjoyment of the people.” The Gap is crossed by the Appalachian Trail, marks the divide between North Carolina and Tennessee, and is the lowest passable “notch” through the Smoky Mountains.
At nearly a mile high, Newfound Gap offers long-range views into both North Carolina and Tennessee and is an average of 10 degrees cooler than surrounding lowlands. History hikes focusing on the early history of the park and nature hikes that explore the fragrant evergreen forest are popular trips in spring and summer. While the secret vistas overlooking autumn’s spectacular Fall Color Walks are offered daily in October and November.
Why Go: Stand in the footsteps of one of America’s most influential leaders, take in the spectacular views, and explore the Appalachian Trail. Experience all of this and more wrapped up in one location.
