TAKE A LAKESHORE DRIVE

One of the Park's hidden gems, and arguably the most controversial tale, the famed Road to Nowhere is full of wildlife, folklore, and history.

The Road to Nowhere: Labeled the “Road to Nowhere” by local residents, Lakeview Drive is reminiscent of the Blue Ridge Parkway with its winding roads and picturesque vistas.

Construction of this meandering stretch of blacktop, meant to provide access to the north shore of Lake Fontana, began in the 60s, but environmental concerns stopped the project with less than six miles completed. Considered a “broken promise” by many of the descendants of families that were forced to leave their homes and communities behind in the 1930s and 40s when Congress formed the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nearly 75 years later, the fight over the road continues…

Today, several history hikes are offered on the Road to Nowhere and one of the best interpretative nature walks in the park begins here. The trails are easy to moderate with minor changes in elevation and very few steep hills. Many of our trips retrace the original logging roads and single lane footpaths to forgotten communities and villages deep in the park.

Why Go: While many of the other entrances to the national park fill up with visitors during the spring, summer and fall months, the Road to Nowhere offers an “off the beaten path” approach to the nature and history within the park. The road is accessible via Bryson City and is within 20 miles of many of the areas inns, bed & breakfasts, cabin rentals, camping facilities, and hotels.
