Tour Description: Our morning sunrise hike begins just inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Accompany your guide on a walk to one of the park’s pristine vantage points to take in the sunrise. Along the way, you’ll discuss the rich human history created before the formation of the park, the ecological transformation that occurs within the park as day dips into night, and the creatures that wake with us and roam the wilderness each day.
Just before sunrise, Appalachian wildlife such as black bear, cottontail rabbits, flying squirrels, red fox, and many others return to their dens and settle in for a long nap after a night spent gathering the food and water they need to survive. Fireflies fade as the sun rises, salamanders return to the comforts of their rocky homes, and the woods transform as the warm rays filter through the canopy high above the valley floor.
Early morning and early evening provide the best times for wildlife viewing. Whether you’re a night owl or an early riser, if you are interested in partaking in a little wildlife spotting, this is the tour for you.
Wildlife at Dawn: Many of the creatures in the Smoky Mountain wilderness rise with the rays of the sun each morning, with one exception. The majority of the park’s mammals – many of which are nocturnal, return to their dens to sleep during the day. Keep an eye out for wild turkey, kingfishers, red-tailed hawk, and many others the day unfolds.
In the wilderness, we hear unknown sounds and our imaginations run wild. In reality, harmless animals create most of the sounds we hear. While on our sunrise nature tour, listen closely to the sounds you hear. You might be surprised to hear the vocal transition from night to day and the symphony that unfolds as the sun rises above the ridgeline.
